This indicates that Smbataberd likely existed before the 5th century, when Armenia was under Roman rule. The fortress is situated at an altitude of about 2,000 meters above sea level; its walls are 3 meters thick, and it is equipped with towers and embrasures. Smbataberd protected the borders of Syunik from invasions.
